External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the landmark exhibition From Shunya to Ananta (Zero to Infinity) The Indian Civilisation’s Contribution to Mathematics at the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 12, 2026.
Speaking at the inauguration, he called for moving beyond the “uni-dimensional narrative” about science, urging global recognition of India’s foundational contributions to mathematics. He highlighted India’s binary system, developed in the third century, as the bedrock of today’s digital age and AI revolution.
Jaishankar also referenced India’s AI Impact Summit, stressing that creativity and innovation cannot be limited to a few nations. He emphasised that righting historical distortions is essential to addressing future challenges.
The exhibition, organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, traces India’s rich mathematical legacy from zero and algebra to calculus through engaging digital panels at the UN delegates.
