India Launches Indigenous Cell Broadcast System for Disaster Alerts

he Government of India has launched a Cell Broadcast System using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerts. A test notification with a siren alert was sent to mobile devices around noon, displaying: “Alert citizens, safe nation”—with a note that no action was required.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified that citizens receiving the message need not panic, as it was a test of India’s new mobile-based disaster communication system. Developed by the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority, the system will enable instant alerts in local languages based on location during emergencies.

The Department of Telecommunications described the initiative as an advanced public alerting framework aimed at timely communication during critical situations, reinforcing India’s commitment to a more responsive emergency communication ecosystem.
