China’s Ning Yuan Dian Kun, a 128-metre, 10,000-deadweight-ton electric containership, completed sea trials off Shanghai in February 2026, marking a significant milestone in zero-emission commercial shipping.
The vessel is powered by ten containerized batteries storing 19 megawatt hours of energy — equivalent to around 250 Tesla battery packs — and can recharge via shore power or a full battery container swap. Solar panels on deck provide additional power for onboard systems.
Beyond propulsion, the ship features an autonomous navigation system capable of route planning, collision avoidance, and automatic berthing — effectively making it a self-driving cargo vessel.
Owned by Ningbo Ocean Shipping, it will operate feeder services to the Ningbo-Zhoushan port, with a sister ship, Ning Yuan Dian Peng, set to join the fleet later this year. While the vessel is a genuine engineering achievement, its long-term reliability and commercial viability are yet to be proven.
