
The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the biennial elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats across ten States. The seats are falling vacant as several members, including former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, Union Ministers George Kurian and Ravneet Singh complete their terms next month.
Among the States going to polls, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka will each elect four members, while Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will elect three each. Jharkhand will see elections for two seats, and one seat each will be contested in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
The EC said the notification for the elections will be issued on June 1, while polling and counting will take place on June 18.
The Commission has also announced Rajya Sabha bypolls for one seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The vacancies arose after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar and AIADMK leader C. V. Shanmugam were elected to their respective State Assemblies. Source: News On Air
